On Friday, November 8, 2024, I wrote the 1st round of the 6th annual 250-word Microfiction Challenge Competition.
I was given the following criteria to use in my story:
Genre: Ghost Story
Action: Surrendering
Word: remind
Length: 250 words maximum
Time: 48 hours
This is what I wrote:
Facing Her Fears
As a young child, Cynthia was continuously anxious. Her hurtful past impacted her future and, as a result, she developed this unusual perceptible sense.
Her father was a vicious alcoholic, and one day, as he spoke to her in the car, she knew that she was at risk. She grasped what his intentions were that evening based on his words. Her whole day was filled with anxiety and worry. She was trapped, awaiting her unwanted fate.
Cynthia's father had a friend over, and they were sitting in the living room drinking until late dusk. When her father's friend left, he entered her bedroom and took her from her bed to his. Haunting screams echoed throughout the house, but the situation remained unchanged. There was no one present to respond to her cries. Cynthia stood alone, valiantly battling to protect herself from a towering and formidable man.
Soon, Cynthia surrendered to the pain and became unconscious. For many years afterward, while sleeping, she would scream in her dreams.
Cynthia never shared her story with anyone, but she was haunted by it for decades. It was a disgusting life-changing event for her.
When she saw men playing with their children in the park, it constantly reminded Cynthia of that dreaded night and her vulnerability. She wished to have had a father like other dads that took her to parks to enjoy herself like all the other children she saw happily playing.
What would it have been like, Cynthia contemplated?
